Add yet another construction project happening right now in Cardiff.
The Cardiff Beach Living Shoreline project is well underway on George’s Beach, just south of Restaurant Row. It is designed to protect Coast Highway 101, restore beach sand dunes, and provide safe walking along George’s down to South Cardiff State Beach (Seaside Reef).
The project is funded by the City of Encinitas, California Coastal Commission, State Coastal Conservancy, Federal Fish and Wildlife, State Parks and the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy.
As seen in the above photo, a deep trench is being built next to the highway and filled first with boulders then sand. An on-site engineer said that it serves the same purpose as a beach wall, but it’s underground. On top of the trench, they will place the walking path which will have turn-outs for beach access.
In the photo below, piles of sand can be seen adjacent to the high tide mark. This sand is protecting the jobsite while awaiting placement into the trench.
